Task 1: Timeline of World War II
Using the readings given to you, complete an annotated timeline of World War II.

You can use World Book Timelines to do this.

Picture

Task 2: Group

In groups of 2 or 3, you will focus on a specific aspect of World War II. You will connect your area of study to the present day through choosing one of the quotations about history, researching your chosen area, and making links between the past, present, and future. This project will involve both an oral presentation and visual component.

Step One: Choose a quotation and event

Keep in mind that the main goal of the assignment is to connect the past to the present.

In your group, choose a quotation and an aspect of WWII that you feel you can connect to each other.

Quotations:

“If you want to understand today, you have to search yesterday.” – Pearl S. Buck

“Each time history repeats itself, the price goes up.” – Anonymous

“Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” – George Santayana

“History must be written of, by, and for the survivors.” - Anonymous

“Human history is a history not only of cruelty, but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, kindness. What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives.”  - Howard Zinn

“There are singular moments in history, dates that divide all that goes before from all that comes after.” – George H.W. Bush

“We must record these things that were forced upon us.” – Kim Hak-Soon

Ideas of Events/Aspects of WWII for Research:
  • Technology
  • Holocaust (Europe or Asia)
  • Propaganda
  • Specific battles
  • Controversial acts of war
  • Bombing of German cities such as Dresden
  • Firebombing of Tokyo
What to do:
·         Research your event – what happened? why is it still important to learn about this event? How does knowing about this event inform our understanding of the present or future?
·         Present your information in some sort of visual format (Prezi, PowerPoint, Poster, Video, etc.)
·         Prepare an Oral Presentation of your information
